Turning Red

I really like how most of our themes turn out and was super excited how easy and fun this one was. This movie, Turning Red, was highly anticipated as it had to do with coming of age for girls. And with Kyrie being that preteen age it was a good way to start conversations with her and to also see her be embarrassed through the whole movie. Even though it was a good movie, I will say this was a movie that they didn’t really watch again.

So this whole theme was based on hot, red items to represent the main character Mei and her learning to control her temper or see turns into a Giant Red Panda. I think each item turned out perfect! For the main meal, we decided on simple Red Hot chicken fingers along with some fresh veggies and dip. We did have back up regular chicken nuggets in case the Red Hot was too hot and well yes it was (good thinking parents)!

When we decided on the drink, we immediately thought of cinnamon as it can be a little spicy and since that was what we were going for. We made a Red Hot (or hot tamales) Cinnamon Citrus Tea! As you will see later with the dessert, we used the leftover hot tamales candies. To make the drink, first steep 2 bags of black tea in the stove top for 5 minutes in 3 cups of water. Once done, you add 2 cups of OJ, 1 quart of fruit juice and 1 cup of the red hots. You then simmer on low to medium heat until the candies dissolve. Now if I used red hots they would have, but since I used hot tamales, they never did. I found them just sitting on the bottom with the color gone. Anyways, once at the desired temperature, serve and enjoy! Tyler and I thought the drink was very delicious and just the right amount of cinnamon taste from the candies. No booze in this one, though Tyler lobbied for a cinnamon whiskey (yuck). It was still cooler out when we did this theme, so it was comforting, warm drink. The girls didn’t like it as much, which was a little surprising.

Now as mentioned, I found a recipe for Red Hot Cupcakes and well I bought Hot tamales instead. They didn’t quite work the way Red Hots would have. The recipe called for blending or using a food processor to crush the candies into tiny bits, but since hot tamales are chewy candies this did not work well. I got them crushed as best as I could and baked them into the vanilla cake. I did the same with the buttercream icing, but also added some cinnamon to enhance that flavor.

They looked great, but the flavor wasn’t as red hot cinnamon spicy as I was hoping. The girls didn’t really want any the next day either, so I don’t think they liked them either!
