Harry Potter- The Theme That Must Not Be Named

Updated: Aug 10, 2022

The first Harry Potter book came out while I was in high school and I have enjoyed them ever since. When I have the time, I go back and reread them periodically. The books are so imaginative and make the world of Harry Potter come to life.

Our oldest Muggle, Kyrie, read the first book over the summer and when she finished we said we would watch the movie. So, of course it was made into a theme dinner! Both girls ended up liking the movie and after wanted to watch all of them.

To go with the theme, I crafted floating candlesticks to hang over our table like in the movies. It turned out looking pretty cool when it became dark and the other lights were off. Kyrie also added a Hogwarts crest to a black cape and wore that around for a bit. Tyler thinks she looks like she could be a Malfoy, what do you think?

This was the theme in which I had lots of good ideas but some didn't work out and others I just didn't get to. We were planning a trip the next week and had so much to do before that evening. For example, one of the treats I wanted to make were these golden snitch popcorn balls, made with popcorn and marshmallows. But I ended up just making popcorn and throwing the gold sprinkles on top. The girls seemed to like it even though the golden snitch balls would have been cooler!

Because there is so many drink ideas to do for Harry Potter, we decided to do two this night. The first one was Pumpkin Juice and it was a bust. It was made with pumpkin puree, apple juice, pumpkin pie spice and some maple syrup. The girls absolutely hated it and wouldn't take more than one sip. It seemed easy enough and I am pretty sure I followed the recipe correctly, but the girls were not a fan. Oh well, you can't win them all.

Later that night, for the actual meal, I made Polyjuice Potion. This one was a winner! I did have to go to multiple stores that day to find the lime sherbet, but I think it was worth it. The drink was simple though, sprite and lime sherbet. Adding the sherbet to the sprite made the drink a little foamy and fizzy, like a magic potion. For the adults, we added vodka and it was quite refreshing.

I also really wanted to make Cornish pasties (I felt these were a typical English meal), but I was a little afraid of making them myself. Thankfully, there is a restaurant called the Cornish Pasty in our area. So I ordered part baked ones from them and just finished baking them before we ate. I was not sure what the girls would like, so I ordered three different kinds. I ordered Bangars and Mash, Guinness Stew and Chicken Pot Pie. The girls didn't like any of them, but Tyler and I really enjoyed them.

With Harry Potter, you can't forget the Butterbeer. Since we already had two drinks for this evening, I decided to make Butterbeer cupcakes and they turned out delicious. I had each girl help with part of it, either the butterscotch filling or the icing. Kyrie helped scoop out the centers of each cupcake and fill them with the butterscotch cream. Juliet helped make the butterscotch buttercream icing and actually topped the cupcakes. We could use some practice on using a piping bag, but they looked decent enough and like I said very yummy!

Thanks for reading and comment below which Harry Potter movie is your favorite?
