There are so many holiday movies! All of them worthy of a themed dinner night. There are seemingly an equally large number of holiday movies that the girls haven’t actually seen. So where to start? Well we decided the holiday season of Covid called for Scrooge, both for the crankiness that we all have felt this year but also for the turn in mood and attitude. So we watched multiple versions of the story starting with the Disney animated version with Jim Carey and ending with the legendary Bill Murray’s Scrooged. The girls do know the story, as we went last year to a local live play rendition of A Christmas Carol and have watched the Mickey Mouse version every year. However, I have to say that I particularly like the Scrooged version as it’s a little modern (I mean the 90s is modern right) and it is quite funny.
When talking this one through, we didn’t want to do a turkey like in the movie since we just did that for the previous theme. So, we decided on doing foods based on the Ghosts of the Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Really we could do anything for the food items and I honestly think our food ideas could easily interchange between any of the periods but this is what we decided so don’t be a Scrooge.
We naturally begin with The Past, we decided on cheese and crackers. I felt like this was something that was easy and was eaten as a meal in the past. Despite the girls turning thier nose up at other cheese based dinner items, this one was a great appetizer as it was devoured by the girls. For them we stick to an extra sharp cheddar, but for us, we always like to try something new. For this one we grabbed an aged cheddar, a wine finished cheese that I can no longer spell or pronounce without the packaging, and a gouda. I did not care for the wine one but the others were yummy.
The next is the Spirit of Christmas Present and since it was cold outside (for Arizona), we wanted to do a warm soup. We had two different kinds, one to satisfy the vegetarian and another the rest of us. They were Chicken Noodle, which is always a winner, and a Broccoli Cheddar. To accompany the soup, we naturally got some sourdough bread bowls.
To finish the night with the Spirit of Christmas Future, we had a Pecan Pie. I really wanted to try and make this and it was a good decision on my part! It was so good Tyler couldn’t stop eating it. I went off of a recipe found on Pinterest that didn’t contain corn syrup. I only had this pie once before and I remember it being really sweet. Don’t get me wrong, this one was sweet too but it wasn’t too sweet. It was gooey on the inside and had a nice slightly crispier top that made it really good.
We decided to also go with a hot drink for this theme. We did hot apple cider for the girls and they both seemed to enjoy it, as they had never had it before. We added either cinnamon or apple whiskey to our apple cider. That drink definitely warmed the belly and we felt like we were in in the original Story setting of England in the middle of winter celebrating Christmas.
Thanks again for reading. Tell me which version of A Christmas Carol is your favorite.
